Memory & Healthy Brain

Maintaining a healthy brain and a good sharp memory is a founding principle of natural healing. Without both brain and nervous system functioning at optimum levels it is impossible to achieve a creative, happy and fulfilling life. Brain fog and occasional forgetfulness are often quite normal during the menopause and for people multi-tasking and under time pressure. This is different from dementia, brain disease and brain damage. Distressingly high levels of emotional pain accompany changes to mental capacity and memory problems, not just for the sufferer but for the families and friends connected to that person. Industrialised countries have large populations that now live much longer. The expectation for quality of life in our late years is high but projected forecasts seem to predict rocketing levels of degenerative brain conditions such as dementia. Keeping a healthy brain right through to our older years is a powerful motivator for many of us and it is never too late to make improvements and prevent deterioration. Here are the main proven strategies for ensuring you retain a sharp memory and great mental capacity right into your final years.

  • Addiction kills the brain. Drugs (including many prescription drugs), alcohol and sugar all act against the cells and tissues of your brain. Get the help you need to make changes in these areas. Sticking within the government's daily and weekly unit guidelines for alcohol intake will help you to stay brain healthy.
  • Head injuries cause brain damage and these are far more common than most people believe. Boxing damage is well documented, and injuries that can occur in other contact sports such as rugby, head manoeuvres in football and American football tackles are now well researched. This reveals the effects on the brain from body impact as well as head impact. Children and young adults in particular need to become better brain aware when considering sport and sport equipment. Road traffic accidents, assaults, shaking, falls and concussion are other areas of concern. Prevention is essential so think ahead and ensure that you and your family indulge in safe behaviour and wear protective headgear as well as using a seat belt in the car. Treat even minor head injuries as important and seek emergency attention then follow a protocol to minimise the risk of brain inflammation.
  • Obesity shrinks the size of the brain. Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Stop smoking and allow high oxygen blood to feed your brain tissues.
  • Optimise your diet to ensure that brain-healthy food dominates. Use anti-inflammatory and antioxidant herbs and spices such as Turmeric and Oregano and add them to food at every opportunity.
  • Take proven supplements that have a positive effect on brain function.
  • Exercise every day and as much as is possible for your situation.
  • The brain also benefits from co-ordination exercises such as table tennis, dancing and yoga.
  • Avoid dehydration as this can damage the brain. Water is the best hydrator especially in summer and the elderly immobile are particularly at risk during periods of high temperature.

Food & herbs for the home

  • High antioxidant and B vitamin foods are essential to the brain, along with good levels of essential fatty acids. Superfood Plus contains optimum levels of all essential vitamins, minerals and plant fatty acids in a form that is easy for the body to use. Superfood Plus is especially useful for the elderly who may find it impossible to eat the high volume of fruits and vegetables required to gain optimum nutrition due to other health problems.
  • Supplement with Linseeds (flax seeds) and flax seed oil to nourish the brain and gain the protective support of omega 3, 6 and 9.
  • A high fat and high sugar diet that is low in essential nutrition is another absolute enemy for a happy brain and great memory. Think colours and focus 50 percent of your diet on beautiful green, red, yellow and orange foods, i.e. colourful fresh vegetables and fruit.
  • Water hydration is vital for mental function; plain water (aim for 2 litres a day) and herbal antioxidant-rich teas such as Mullein & Star Anise will bring you nothing but benefit as will Nettle Herb Tea, which is rich in iron and essential minerals and easy to drink.
  • Support your adrenal gland capacity to manage stress and ask us for a sample of EnergiRevive Powder.
  • Vitamin D3 is very low in general populations and markedly low in the elderly. This is manufactured by our skin in bright sunshine and is a powerful brain protector. Look for a good quality vitamin D3 supplement, especially for the winter months  avoid cheaper brands of vitamin D2 which can be poorly absorbed.
  • Read Jill Davies' book “Ginkgo Biloba” as a free download and decide if this herb can benefit you.
  • High levels of antioxidants are found in PolliTox Capsules and you are welcome to call us and request a free sample.

Natural healing

  • A natural healing protocol is always based on acknowledgment and respect for the threefold unity of our nature, mind and body and spiritual energy.
  • A healthy brain is a creative one and a curious one. Seek new learning and enhance your enjoyment of your life at every opportunity.
  • Be thankful and express gratitude on a regular basis for all of your blessings – this is a function of a healthy brain and a joyful spirit. People with healthy brains contribute more to others, enjoy their communities, are interesting people and interested in others.
  • Joy is contagious – avoid grumblers.
  • Fear is contagious – avoid negativity, negative news and negative people.
