Memory & Healthy Brain
Maintaining a healthy brain and a good sharp memory is a founding principle of natural healing. Without both brain and nervous system functioning at optimum levels it is impossible to achieve a creative, happy and fulfilling life. Brain fog and occasional forgetfulness are often quite normal during the menopause and for people multi-tasking and under time pressure. This is different from dementia, brain disease and brain damage. Distressingly high levels of emotional pain accompany changes to mental capacity and memory problems, not just for the sufferer but for the families and friends connected to that person. Industrialised countries have large populations that now live much longer. The expectation for quality of life in our late years is high but projected forecasts seem to predict rocketing levels of degenerative brain conditions such as dementia. Keeping a healthy brain right through to our older years is a powerful motivator for many of us and it is never too late to make improvements and prevent deterioration. Here are the main proven strategies for ensuring you retain a sharp memory and great mental capacity right into your final years.
- Addiction kills the brain. Drugs (including many prescription drugs), alcohol and sugar all act against the cells and tissues of your brain. Get the help you need to make changes in these areas. Sticking within the government's daily and weekly unit guidelines for alcohol intake will help you to stay brain healthy.
- Head injuries cause brain damage and these are far more common than most people believe. Boxing damage is well documented, and injuries that can occur in other contact sports such as rugby, head manoeuvres in football and American football tackles are now well researched. This reveals the effects on the brain from body impact as well as head impact. Children and young adults in particular need to become better brain aware when considering sport and sport equipment. Road traffic accidents, assaults, shaking, falls and concussion are other areas of concern. Prevention is essential so think ahead and ensure that you and your family indulge in safe behaviour and wear protective headgear as well as using a seat belt in the car. Treat even minor head injuries as important and seek emergency attention then follow a protocol to minimise the risk of brain inflammation.
- Obesity shrinks the size of the brain. Maintain a healthy weight.
- Stop smoking and allow high oxygen blood to feed your brain tissues.
