Glandular Fever (Mono)

Commonly affecting teenagers and young people, this is an infectious disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus that is transmitted by saliva and nasal fluids (hence its nickname of "kissing disease"). The onset of illness may be acute or it may be so mild that it is missed. But for some people the symptoms of glandular fever may persist for some time and a full recovery may take months. The blood test that confirms the viral attack upon lymphatic tissue is not especially accurate and diagnosis may be based on symptoms. These typically will be flu-like symptoms which persist beyond the time period for flu, plus fatigue. Symptoms can worsen over time although transmission risk is minimised after a month; it is therefore vital that early management of the disease is established. This will prevent loss of extended periods of school and university time and minimises the opportunity for chronic illness to develop into deeper forms of immune and nervous system dysfunction, such as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).

Foods & herbs for the home

  • Malaise can create distaste for eating and optimum nutrition can become a problem, especially if sugar and soda drinks are relied upon. Superfood Plus is a plant-based high mineral and high energy food that is highly absorbable and gentle on digestion; also ask for a free sample of EnergiRevive Powder.
  • Stimulant drinks are too taxing on the nervous system during the longer period of convalescence required. It is best to avoid soda drinks, tea and coffee and an excess of sugar (this includes commercial fruit juices).
  • Juices from fresh and organic fruits and vegetables diluted in water will be highly beneficial.
  • Prolonged rest and low appetite can cause a sluggish bowel. Keep elimination channels regular with linseed sprinkled on food or added to juices. For additional bulk and soothing consider Psyllium Husks.
  • Echinacea is a herb with a well established reputation for enhancing immune responses. You can read more about this herb by downloading "Echinacea" by Jill Davies. Echinacea combined with other immune herbs will benefit immensely, e.g. thyme and oregano (see Herbs Hands Healing's facebook video on these herbs).

Natural healing

  • Physical therapies can be introduced after symptoms ease. Exercise should be gentle, such as pilates or yoga.
