Medicinal Use:

Dose:
Tincture, powder, infusion and ointment.
The dosage of this herb is variable according to the strength of the tincture and the individual ability to tolerate this herb. However dosage is measured in drops rather than mls. As a general guide begin with 5 drops of the tincture 3 to 8 x daily. Increase the dose gradually as needed.
GEM - externally applied locally not longer than 2 days with 14 day break.
A.C. Powder pinch to 25mls lemon juice diluted with water as gargle.
Ointment apply on unbroken skin only.

Contraindications

1) In cases of asthma this herb should be restricted, due to its bronchial striction with initial exposure episodes may be aggravated by single use.
2) Avoid external use where there is broken skin and near to the eyes, due to its local irritant properties.
3) Avoid where there is known hypersensitive skin due to a possible allergic reaction when applied externally.
4) Avoid with stomach ulcers/inflammation due to the increase in gastric acid production, which may cause mucosal exfoliation and haemorrhage. Note: This advice conflicts with traditional use and emphirical understanding of this herb, where it has been u8sed to stem internal bleeding and to protect mucous membranes.
5) Avoid with chronic irritable bowel due to this herb?s irritant and intestinal contractile properties (capsaicin).
6) Avoid when using Theophylline as the absorption rate is increased when administered before or with capsicum fruit.
7) Avoid with Hexobarbital as this increases sleeping time and plasma concentration when used with extract of capsicum.
8) Avoid with ACE inhibitors, which may predispose coughing when capsicum cream is applied.
9) Caution is advised with the use of preparations of this herb during pregnancy, and low doses should be considered.
