We use this herb as a tea only, and recommend that it be used for a maximum of 2 weeks, with a break of one month before using again.
Contraindications
1) Harmless in low therapeutic doses, however, large doses or prolonged use can cause fatty degeneration of the liver and kidney haemorrhages. Avoid long-term use, more than two weeks, or continuous high doses.
2) Allergic hypersensitivity may result in contact dermatitis in some people due to the sesquiterpene lactone content of this herb.
3) Do not use during pregnancy due to the arbortifacient effects of the high nitrate content of this herb.
4) Although the alkaloids within Boneset have not been definitely identified, the presence of toxic pyrrolixidine alkaloids throughout the genus suggests that the use of boneset should be limited.
5) Large doses of this herb are both emetic and cathartic.
