F Tincture 0.25 to 0.5 teaspoon (10 to 20 drops,) 2 times daily.
Powder and decoction 0.25 to 1g, 2 times daily.
Cease using for 3 months after 1 month?s use. GEM Tincture 1:10 (g/ml) 60% ethanol 0.3 to 1.0ml, 3 times daily 500 to 1000mg dried rhizome, 3 times daily.
Contraindications
1) Avoid use of this herb during pregnancy, due to the uterine stimulant actions of the alkaloids berberine and hydrastine, it may also elevate Blood Pressure.
2) Where there is ear discharge do not use this herb, as it may rupture the eardrum.
3) There are conflicting studies regarding the use of this herb, with doxycycline e-tetracycline like anti-biotic. Some studies show that Goldenseal reduces their efficiency, whilst others suggest this not to be the case.
4) Long term use of this herb should be avoided as it may reduce Vitamin B absorbtion and reduce intestinal bacteria. It may also elevate blood pressure and cause weakness and in severe cases hallucinations.
5) Large doses of this herb may cause symptoms of vomitting and diarrhoea, a slow pulse rate and paralysis of the respiratory system.
6) Avoid strong extracts when using topically as this may cause ulceration of the skin.
NOTE: This herb has been on the overharvested list in the past. Commercial production seems to have rectified this, but other alternatives of use on occasions include Turmeric and Berberis
