This algae also has a rich array of vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, essential fatty acids, amino acids and hundreds of micronutrients, trace elements and nutritional compounds, similar to spirulina and blue-green algae.
Chlorella Contains:
Vitamin A - Beta Carotene, Vitamin B1 - Thiamine, Vitamin B2 - Riboflavin, Vitamin 6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Magnesium, Potassium, Phosphorus, Copper, Zinc, Iodine, Cobalt, Calcium, Iron, Niacin, Protein. It also contains the following amino acids (protein): Arginine, Lysine, Histidine, Phenylalanine, Tyrosine, Leucine, Isoleucine, Mthionine, Valine, Alanine, Glycine, Proline, Glutamic Acid, Serine, Threonine, Aspartic acid, Tryptophan and Cystine. Also all digestive enzymes including chloropyllase and pepsin. It also contains lipoic acid, an important microbial growth factor.
The name Chlorella derives from two Latin words meaning 'leaf' (green) and 'small', referring to the unusually high content of chlorophyll (the highest of any known plant) which gives Chlorella its characteristic deep emerald-green colour. Algae are a group of one-celled plants, containing no true root, stem or leaf.
What is Chlorella?
Chlorella is a green single-celled algae cultivated in fresh water ponds. It has a grass-like smell because the high amounts of chlorophyll in it, the highest concentration of any plant in the world. It has existed on the plant for billions of years and was one of the first foods to appear. Fossils of Chlorella have been found dating back 3 billion years. Chlorella is one of the healthiest, most potent foods in existence. In addition to being a perfect food for humans, lower grades of Chlorella are fed to livestock all over the world.
How is Chlorella Grown?
Dr. Schulze's chlorella is grown in confined ponds, free from any other species of algae. This confinement means that no cross contamination from other species can take place this ensures that no microtoxins can contaminate the chlorella. The water in which this chlorella grows is drawn through a deep pipeline from its origins 2000 feet below water level. The water is kept free of anything that could pollute the chlorella and therefore problems that have arisen in lake grown spirulina are simply not encountered. Chlorella quadruples approximately every 24 hours, which is a good sign of health and purity of species.
Chlorella is a powerful high-protein algae. It is about 65% assimilable protein. There are five grams of protein in one teaspoon or fifteen grams in one tablespoon. It contains carotenoids, high amounts of magnesium, and the super detoxifier known as chlorophyll. It also contains approximately two to six times more chlorophyll than spirulina, but a little less protein.
The cell wall of chlorella has been found to be valuable. It binds with heavy metals, pesticides, and such carcinogens as PCBs found to (polychlorobinphenyls) and carries these toxins safely out of the body. Another feature of the cell is a substructure that contains complex polysaccharides which is a plant chemical constituent renowned for promoting powerful immune responses. The cell wall also contains compounds related to those found in bacteria that fortify immunity and protect against mutation.
Chlorella is also rich in a nutrient factor isolated in the 1950s and not available in other green foods called 'Chlorella Growth Factor' (CGF). This CGF makes chlorella most useful for improving growth patterns in children, maintaining health in old age, healing injuries, and initiating growth where it has been stunted from disease or degeneration, including Alzheimer's disease, nervousness, palsy, seizures, sciatica, multiple sclerosis and other nerve disorders. It also promotes normal growth of disease processes such as tumours. Because its chlorophyll content is one of the highest of any food, chlorella is useful for the many conditions which benefit from chlorophyll's purification, renewal, and anti-inflammatory properties. Treatment of viruses and fungi which sap energy, such as candida-overgrowth, Epstein-Barr virus, chronic fatigue immune deficiency syndrome (CFIDS), and AIDS, is advanced by the immune-enhancing qualities of CGF as well as the antiviral effect of chlorophyll. It also assists all blood sugar imbalances like diabetes, hypoglycemia, manic depression. Chlorella contains large quantities of fatty acids particularly the artery-cleansing, omega-3, alpha-linolenic variety; perhaps the reason chlorella has been shown to be so effective in reducing blood cholesterol in the body and preventing artherosclerosis.

Why and how is the outer shell of the Chlorella cell broken open?
The cell walls on chlorella should be broken for maximum assimilation but it must be done in a way that does not destroy the nutrients. Dr Schulze's SuperFood plus has carefully cracked cell walls which is an important point of quality and production. If the cell wall of the Chlorella is not broken open, the nutrients in Chlorella are not accessible and it is this outer fibrous cell wall that differentiates Chlorella from any other algae. Chlorella is 'cracked' by the pressure differential method of rupturing the outer fibre shell rather than crushing it. This is the most effective and organic method of breaking open the cell wall because it does not disturb the nutrients in Chlorella yet allows full access to its wonderful attributes.
"Chlorella is a wonderful food supplement and it will work best and most rapidly if combined with a correctly balanced and proportioned food regime....We find that the average person does not get enough green vegetables in the diet and chlorella helps compensate for that. The average person may not have proper bowel elimination and chlorella helps make up for that. The average woman does not have enough iron or calcium, especially after the age of forty, and chlorella is high in both. The average person does not repair and rebuild tissue fast enough, and chlorella helps speed it up. These are some of the reasons why chlorella has such a positive effect on health."

The Myriad of Benefits Gained from Consuming Chlorella
Chlorella corrects nutritional deficiencies and facilitates detoxification. Clinical usefulness of chlorella to detoxify serum cadmium was shown by a scientific study by Hagino. When chlorella was given for 12 days, cadmium excretions increased 3 times over the baseline, after 24 days of chlorella the urine cadmium had increased 7 times over the baseline. Chlorella has been studied to detoxify polychlorbiphenyl (PCB) and chlordecone, another chlorinated hydrocarbon. The fact that chlorella helps liver detoxification has been shown by many studies, one demonstrated elevated levels of albumin and decreased levels of globulins which is what a doctor expects to see when a liver improves its function.
Chlorella is Alkaline and Helps Balance your Body's pH
It is important that we maintain a balance body pH of ideally about 7.2-7.4, which is about neutral. However because of our poor diet of junk food, fast food, over-cooked, processed foods, especially soft drinks (the worst is cola), which have a pH of 2.7. This is several thousand times more acidic than our bodies. This is important because all diseases start and live and thrive in an acidic environment and do not live well in an alkaline environment. Thus it follows that to keep ourselves as alkaline as possible.* Becoming too alkaline is rare but not unheard of. Cancer rates have risen steadily until now that fully one third of all people in the United States will get cancer in their lifetime! The rise of fast, junk and processed foods match those of rising cancer rates. Thirty years ago, cancer in children was almost unheard of. Now they have entire hospital wards given over to children with cancer. We are too acidic! That's why we are getting sick!
Chlorophyll and Magnesium Promote Cardiovascular Vascular Health
Chlorella gets its name from the high amounts of chlorophyll it possesses, the highest of any plant known. Chlorophyll cells are nearly identical to haemoglobin (red blood cells) with one exception: Chlorophyll has a magnesium molecule at that centre of it; haemoglobin has an iron molecule at the centre of it. This is important because magnesium is essential for the heart to function properly. Every time our heart beats, it is utilizing magnesium to do so. Chlorophyll has been used successfully in the treatment of cardiac hypertension. It also cleanses that bowel, kidneys, liver and bloodstream. Chlorophyll is effective against anaemia and stimulates the production of red blood cells in the body. It also helps carry oxygen around the body and to the brain. This is why Chlorella is often called "Brain Food".
Immune System Support
Chlorella helps boost the immune system because it contains a compound known as chlorellan, which stimulates the production of interferon and the activity of macrophages (important defence cells in our immune system). Because of this and other reasons, chlorella has a strong anti-cancer activity.
Chlorella and Chlorophyll
"Chlorella contains the highest percentage of chlorophyll in the known plant world, from 1.7% to 7%. The chlorophyll molecule is very similar to the haemoglobin molecule in blood, and it acts as a wonderful cleanser in the bowel, kidneys, liver and bloodstream. Green plants help build red blood cell count and control calcium in the body. Chlorella contains as high as 7% chlorophyll, 35 times more than we find in alfalfa.
An experiment by the US Army showed that animals fed chlorophyll-rich greens survived twice as long as other animals when all were exposed to fatal levels of radiation. Another experiment by scientists at National Taiwan University showed that Chlorella helped protect rats from liver damage when they were fed a toxic chemical named ethionine.""Chlorella, Jewel of the Far East" by Dr. Bernard Jensen,D.O.,Ph.D.
Chlorella and Liver Function
"Fink studied Chlorella as a food in rats and concluded that it prevented liver gangrene in these animals. The agents that were thought to be exerting these effects were thioamine acid, vitamin E and an unidentified substance (factor 3 of Schwarz)....Chlorella has also been shown to protect the liver from toxic injury due to ethionine. Ethionine is a drug which induces a fatty liver type of injury much like the liver damage that malnutrition produces. Other studies have shown elevated levels of albumin and decreased levels of globulins while taking Chlorella which is what you would expect to see."

Detoxification Properties of Chlorella
Chlorella is highly detoxifying for many reasons but one specific detoxification capability of Chlorella is due to its unique cell wall and the material associated with it. The cell walls of Chlorella have been shown to have three layers of which the thicker middle layer contains cellulose microfibrils. Atkinson et al found a 14nm thick trilaminar layer outside the cell wall proper which was extremely resistant to breakage and thought to be composed of a polymerised carotene like material.....Laboratory studies showed that there were two active absorbing substances - sporopollenin (a naturally occurring carotene like polymer which is resistant to degradation) and the algae cell walls.""Chlorella - Natural Medicinal Algae" by Dr David Steenblock,B.S.,M.Sc.,D.O.
Chlorella and Its Effect on Degenerative Diseases
"...mineral salts in the soil must be water soluble to be used by plants, and if they are water soluble they are also subject to becoming dissolved by rain, washed into streams and rivers and carried off to sea. It is only in this last century that intensive agricultural methods have displaced more natural means of restoring soils. In a few decades, agriculture has stripped the earth of nutrients that may have taken nature thousands or millions of years to put there. The bottom line, depleted soils build depleted food crops; depleted foods build depleted bodies; depleted bodies build disease....Chlorella, unlike most food crops, is grown in liquid, not in soil. The proper ingredients for its efficient growth can be easily obtained, so it can be grown almost anywhere, and the percentage of its various nutrients can be changed by modifying the growth medium. Chlorella transforms inorganic chemicals into active, living bio-nutrients, sun-energized to provide vital food nutrients.""Chlorella, Jewel of the Far East" by Dr. Bernard Jensen,D.O.,Ph.D.
Chlorella's Effect on Digestion and Digestive Tract Health
"The bowel is the most important elimination organ in the body. It is often affected by dietary deficiencies, lack of fibre, lack of exercise and the stress of modern living. Chlorella has proven itself to be a wonderful cleanser and tonic for the bowel, even restoring the normal function of a flaccid, under-active bowel, in some cases. The average colon contains 400 to 500 species of bacteria, fungi, yeast and virus, which scientists classify as "friendly" (beneficial to the body) or "unfriendly" flora, such as E.coli, which multiply rapidly until they make up 85% of the bowel flora. These add their own highly poisonous wastes to the colon environment, increasing the toxin level even more... There are four components of Chlorella that accelerate the process of bowel cleansing and detoxification. These four ingredients are chlorophyll, Chlorella Growth Factor (CGF), protein and fiber, which work in harmony to clean up the colon. The chlorophyll in Chlorella is the most powerful cleansing agent found in nature. As it begins to detoxify the bowel, it also detoxifies the liver and bloodstream, feeds the friendly flora and soothes irritated tissue along the bowel wall. CGF speeds up healing in the bowel wall, while the protein in Chlorella is immediately available to repair and rebuild damaged tissue, and the RNA so abundant in Chlorella also hastens the healing process.""Chlorella, Jewel of the Far East" by Dr Bernard Jensen,D.O.,Ph.D.
