Introduction:
This difficult phase of the monthly cycle can last at worst from ovulation through to the onset of menstruation; or more moderately a week after ovulation and up until the period starts. This can therefore be anything from 14 days to 3 days before the period starts.
The monthly round of sugar cravings, intemperate outbursts, bloating, water retention, sore breasts, spots, aches and pains, lethargy can all be improved upon through working on the liver, often the seat of congestion leading to these symptoms. Anger is traditionally associated with the liver which manifests when too many hormones outstrip is ability to process them. If the liver cannot produce enough cholesterol this in turn leads to low levels of progesterone production, which also plays a part pre-menstrually. Imbalanced Hormone levels will be largely to blame but the effective functioning of the thyroid and adrenal gland will be important
Nutritional Advice:
Follow a wholesome diet with particular attention to 'liver' foods e.g. olive oil, lemon juice.
No fats, tea, coffee, alcohol or sugar should be taken.
Cravings for chocolate can be satisfied by eating organic 80% chocolate which will supply much needed 'happy hormones' and give a vital mental boost and comfort.
Avoid red meat if possible; as it is often overly rich in oestrogen, but organically reared is less so.
Include foods containing sulphur like garlic, onions, nuts and seeds.
Decrease intake of cabbage family foods for one week before your period.
Eat plenty of fresh fruits, whole grains.
Take Omega 3 6 & 9 capsules e.g. hemp or flax seed as these will support the hormones in general.

Natural Healing: Exercise consistently but lightly. Avoid taxing physical exercise and do more walking, dancing, yoga, meditation and breathing exercises. Try special abdominal/pelvic exercises and perhaps lie on a slant board. Take long relaxing baths and ask for a massage if there is anyone available to give it. Hot and cold showers during the month will help, but avoid them just prior to and during menstruation.
Herb Quality:
A large proportion of our herbs are grown in English soils, harvested using bio-chemistry analysis and many but not always, processed fresh, which heightens their remedial properties. The majority are grown organically and or sustainably wild-crafted. All manufacturing is carried out using licensed good manufacturing practice.
