Introduction:This is a viral respiratory tract infection that is highly contagious. It takes fourteen days from initial exposure to incubate and the child (or adult) will be infectious on the seventh day of exposure until ten days after the appearance of the rash. It affects the eyes and skin as well and is spread by coughing and sneezing. A definitive diagnosis are the Koplik's spots which appear in the mouth on the second or third day (they are white on the cheek lining), otherwise they are behind the ears, and on the face and neck where they often originate. The fever generally increases as the rash develops; fluids only should be taken during this stage. |
