Insomnia and Disturbed Patterns of Sleep

Introduction:

Sleep deprivation can be nothing short of devastating and leaves us unable to function in our normal daily lives. Its causes can be numerous and therefore additional remedies may need to be chosen accordingly.

There is a type of insomnia called 'Primary'. When it occurs in the absence of underlying diseases and conditions, the advice below is for this type of insomnia predominately.

The secondary type is linked to other problems like Drug/Alcohol dependence, mood disorders etc. Symptoms that are part and parcel of insomnia are difficulty falling asleep and excessively early awakening. Daytime fatigue and lack of concentration will be additional problems.

Nutritional Advice:

Follow a healthy diet, totally removing all dietary stimulants like coffee and tea. In fact avoid all stimulants and depressants. Remove wheat from the diet for 3 months, as this is involved in preventing the production of Tryptophan in the body (Tryptophan is the pre-curser of serotonin and enough serotonin denotes depressive states). Foods rich in B vitamins will feed and soothe the nervous system - engevita flakes.

Herb Quality:

A large proportion of our herbs are grown in English soils, harvested using bio-chemistry analysis and many but not always, processed fresh, which heightens their remedial properties. The majority are grown organically and or sustainably wild-crafted. All manufacturing is carried out using licensed good manufacturing practice.

DO NOT MIX HERBAL MEDICINE AND GP PRESCRIBED MEDICATION WITHOUT THE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF YOUR GP OR PRACTIONER

Natural Healing:

Practice barefoot walking on grass, sand or pebbles. This will ground and discharge excess static electricity. It really does work!

Do breathing exercises and meditation.

Take saunas and hot and cold showers and try skin brushing.

It is important to note and remember that we need stimulation in order to sleep. Therefore go running or dancing, take a long walk or swim and then learn to relax, sunbathe for short periods of time or take catnaps. Explore and practice all of these in tandem.
