Chronically low blood pressure is when the blood pressure is consistently lower than 100mm Hg and the Diastolic 60 to 80mm Hg. Vegans and vegetarians usually have a lower blood pressure, (say 110/70) than a meat eater whose normal blood pressure averages 120/80 in a healthy young person. This is fine unless accompanied by fatigue and lethargy when exercising. The thyroid, bowel and lymph systems will all need monitoring. Anaemia may also be a factor, particularly in long-term vegans. See anaemia for further information. In crisis situations, low blood pressure is a sign of trauma, otherwise it can indicate active heart disease. Close monitoring is essential.
