An acute infectious disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. It is a long lasting infection involving lymph glands, most often found in young adults and teenagers. Must be carefully managed to avoid progressing to ME. Can be identified by blood test as Epstein-Barr virus, which belongs to the herpes family. Also called mononucleosis due to its action on the immune system and white blood cells. Contracted via saliva and nasal secretion - kissing at school, college or university are prime environments! The Taber Dictionary states that "The virus is transmitted in saliva and typically flu like symptoms appears 7-14 days after contact", however in practice we have found this not always to be the case for the onset of glandular fever.
Although infection lasts 2-4 weeks very often the recovery period can extend much longer e.g. many months. If a quick diagnosis is made at onset then all activity can be curtailed and recovery can be achieved in 4-6 weeks due to enforced rest.
