Introduction:
Asthma is a condition where the bronchi (tracheobronchial tree) of the lungs become over responsive to various stimuli. This results in episodic narrowing of the airways, which makes breathing very difficult. Triggers include house dust, pollen, dairy and wheat product allergies, stress and viral or bacterial infection. A low immune system and poor digestion can and do contribute to, or indeed cause asthma.
Potential Link Between Childhood Asthma and Chlorine in Swimming Pools
A recent study by Professor Alfred Bernard, Brussels (July 18 th 2006, Guardian newspaper) found that there may be some link between a rise in childhood asthma and swimming pools- particularly in Britain (where we also have more indoor pools). This research is still ongoing, but one thing that is known is the damage chlorine does to the lungs. A by-product of chlorination is Trichloramine gas (which produces the distinctive chlorine smell). This gas goes straight into the lungs when inhaled and damages tissue. If you are concerned about your child or infant, particularly if they already have asthma or respiratory problems, then avoid chlorinated pools. Some swimming pools use non-chlorine alternatives, like Silver or Ozone. These keep the pool just as hygienic. Visit www.poolstore.co.uk for information on these alternatives. Nutritional Advice:
Avoid wheat and diary products in order to cut down on excessive mucus production.
Ensure good digestion, absorption and gut flora levels and if they are poor look further for help, try pro-biotic's made with soil organisms e.g. Kiki ltd.
Include large amounts of garlic in your diet each day.
Natural Healing: Practice breathing exercises. Take general exercise. Take relaxing baths and include essential oils in them or for massage. Use chest poultices based on essential oils and mustard or simply a castor oil pack. Hot and cold showers over the chest will assist greatly. |

Herb Quality:
A large proportion of our herbs are grown in English soils, harvested using bio-chemistry analysis and many but not always, processed fresh, which heightens their remedial properties. The majority are grown organically and or sustainably wild-crafted. All manufacturing is carried out using licensed good manufacturing practice.
DO NOT MIX HERBAL MEDICINE AND GP PRESCRIBED MEDICATION WITHOUT THE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF YOUR GP OR PRACTIONER
